Bronx Rising!: The South Bronx Experience with Bobby Sanabria

The Bronx Music Heritage Center was thrilled to partner with Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen for a special edition of Bronx Rising, featuring none other than multi-Grammy-nominated drummer, educator, and Bronx legend Bobby Sanabria.

In this intimate and lively public radio interview, Sanabria reflects on the vibrant cultural landscape that shaped him—from evenings with his father zoning out to the sounds of Tito Puente and Dobie Gray, to the electric energy of Bronx streets pulsing with rhythm and resilience. “He bought himself a La-Z-Boy chair. He would sit there after dinner, smoke a cigarette, and zone out listening to music,” Sanabria recalls. “Bad for the lungs, great for the soul.” And just like that, the making of a musician begins.

Presented in partnership with Person Place Thing, a show built on the idea that people reveal themselves most vividly when talking about something they care about, Bobby spoke about one person, one place, and one thing that shaped his life and career—and in doing so, brought the soul of the Bronx to the forefront.
